A neighbourhood that grew around the railway
Streetly takes its name from the Roman road Icknield Street, and it started to develop after a station opened here in 1879, with the first houses built along Streetly Lane and Foley Road. Until 1914 building stayed mostly between Thornhill Road and Chester Road, continued between the wars, and then expanded strongly after the Second World War. That's why Streetly has houses of very different ages, and why we check what your home is built from before suggesting how to decorate it.
Decorating post-war family homes
Much of Streetly's housing dates from the 1950s to the 1970s, so many homes here have had decades of decorating layered on top of each other. Stripping several layers of old wallpaper, making good the plaster underneath and sanding back thick gloss on doors and skirting boards is often the biggest part of the job, and it's what decides how good the finish looks. If your ceilings have a textured coating, have it tested before anyone sands or scrapes it, because some older ones contain asbestos.
Older homes near Foley Road and Streetly Lane
The streets closest to the old station are among the oldest in Streetly, with houses that date from before the First World War. Older houses often have original timber windows, fireplaces and plaster detail that deserve careful preparation and the right primers, not a quick coat over the top. We take our time on this kind of woodwork, repairing it where it needs it, so the paint lasts.

Questions about decorating in Streetly
Do you cover Streetly and the roads around Sutton Park?
Yes. We cover Streetly, including Foley Road, Thornhill Road and Chester Road, and neighbouring Four Oaks, Little Aston and Sutton Coldfield town centre. Send your postcode with your quote request if you're not sure whether we cover your street.
How do you deal with old layers of wallpaper and thick paint?
We strip loose wallpaper, wash the walls, fill and sand where needed and prime before painting. Thick old gloss on woodwork is sanded back to a sound surface so the new finish bonds properly and the details aren't clogged. We explain the preparation in your written quote.
Can you paint exterior fascias and garage doors?
Yes. We clean, sand, prime and repaint exterior woodwork, fascias, fences and garage doors, working around dry weather so each coat can cure. Tell us what's on the property and we'll quote for the job.
